Remembering Skye

It is with a great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news that XGen’s founder and CEO, Skye Boyes, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 12, 2015.

We at XGen have lost a brilliant leader, an inspiring mentor, loving husband, and a dear friend. Those of us who were lucky enough to know and work with Skye will remember his warm sense of generosity, his boundless enthusiasm, and the inspiring creative vision he managed to bring to each endeavour.

Skye was incredibly grateful to the passionate fans that followed his career all the way from the early days of programming flash games in his basement to one of his proudest achievements; launching a game alongside the PlayStation 4. He has built an incredible legacy for himself and we at XGen are committed to both preserving and extending that legacy on his behalf.

If you would like to share your thoughts, sympathies, and remembrances we encourage you to do so on the forums at the link below.

Thank you for your kindness and continuing support,

- Kaelyn Boyes and the XGen team

Greetings XGennonites! ...

July 24, 2015

Greetings XGennonites!

My name is Leif Oleson-Cormack and I’m here to introduce myself as the lead writer for XGen’s upcoming adventure game series.

For the past four months, I’ve had the tremendous pleasure of creating characters, devising puzzles, and building worlds with the uber-talented folks here at XGen. While this is my first project for the company as a writer, you can hear some of my voice-over work in some of XGen’s more recent titles (I played the tutorial narrator in “Defend Your Castle” as well as the cantankerous Karl Redden in "Super Motherload”).

As a writer, most of my work has been in the realm of theatre, with occasional dabbling in film and television. I was recently a fellow in Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights program at The Juilliard School and my full-length play, “Dead Peasants” was the winner of Samuel French’s Canadian Playwrights Contest. Some of the places my work has been staged include Shadow Theatre, Northern Light Theatre, Signature Theatre, Ignite! Festival, The Edmonton Fringe Festival, and the Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre Festival.

My most formative experiences as a gamer came from obsessively re-playing point-and-click LucasArts adventure games as a child. Because of this, I’ve always admired games that possess clearly defined characters, intricate storylines, and strong senses of humor. With this new project, I’m hoping we can build upon these principles to create a completely new and engrossing gaming experience that will be able to stand proudly alongside XGen’s rich library of titles.

We've been quietly working on our next game since April of last year. After a year of design, prototyping, and refinement, we've managed to concretize the broader design and discover a number of unique features that people seem to really like.

We're looking forward to talking more about what we're working on soon.

Hello World! ...

January 7, 2015

Hello World!

My name is Jed Lang, and I'm the newest addition to the team -- in the capacity of Lead Developer. I thought I should say hello to the community, and give you guys a little background about myself so you can get a better idea of who just joined XGen Studios~

I'm a 100% self-taught programmer, and have been programming for about 16 years, touching on more than a couple handfuls of languages, and dozens of technologies. I've done development in a variety of areas, including business software, video games, and tools. I'm hoping I can make a positive contribution to the XGen team going forward!

I generally spend my free time reverse engineering video games that don't have mod support, and developing modding tools for those games. The biggest thing you might know me from on the internet is my side project called DSMODT - A Dark Souls modding tool. This tool also put me on Kotaku when I used it to put a boss from another game into Dark Souls.

I look forward to working with the XGen team going forward, and if the community is even half as warm and welcoming, I'm going to feel right at home here.

Vinyl OST for Super Motherload - ...

Vinyl OST for Super Motherload -
Hey! I just wanted to let you know that my soundtrack for Super Motherload is now out on vinyl. The positive reception this soundtrack has been given since its release last year has been so encouraging and generous, and being able to now have it available on a format I believe brings a different perspective to the listening experience is really an honour. My main goal in making this soundtrack was that the music had to sound fun. So playing with the world the game is set in (so much of which XGen Studios’ artist Scott Carmichael developed visually and which is on display on the cover and inside this album), I felt like it really made sense to explore campy science fiction and horror themes in the realm of dance, electronic and pop music. While making this soundtrack, I was listening to a lot of new electronic music from places like the Fade to Mind, Nightslugs and UNO rosters while going through Billboard Hot 100s from the 70s and 80s. It was a really fun exploration for me then, and I’m very excited to share new music I’m working on with you soon!

If you’ve had a chance to play Super Motherload and hear the music, thank you. Another huge thank you if you’ve purchased a digital copy of the soundtrack or shown a friend or reached out to me. Your support made it possible to print this run of vinyl. If you’ve already purchased a digital copy and would now like to buy the vinyl, I’d like to offer you credit on the vinyl for the amount you’ve already paid. Please first send me an email at eric@xgenstudios.com with your digital copy proof of purchase and I will send you a discount code for the amount you’ve already paid, which you can then apply at the time of purchase.

Digital and vinyl copies of the Super Motherload OST are available from Bandcamp.

So long glossy buttons—this is the new XGen Studios website!

We wanted to give XGenStudios.com more than just a coat of paint for this redesign, we've put a lot of effort into thinking about the future of the company and the direction we're heading as a studio. The redesign showcases XGen Studios, first and foremost, as a video game developer. Not only are there less ads, but we've made a lot of usability changes that will make hunting for your next web game addiction that much easier. The main page is now a fresh clean design that we are proud to present to the world as the face of our company.

Feel free to discuss the new site on our forums and if you catch any broken links or strange bugs, let us know in this thread.

We teamed up with Roxley Game Laboratory...

October 21, 2014

We teamed up with Roxley Game Laboratory to create a 2-4 player analogue edition of Super Motherload.

The board game is aptly described by Roxley as "a fast paced tile-laying deck-builder featuring beautiful artwork and tightly polished combo-rific gameplay."

We've been working closely with them for over a year, scrutinizing every detail at each stage of the process. The result is something we're proud to add to our catalogue of games. It looks gorgeous, the mechanics work well, and most importantly it's fun to play.

You can pre-order the boardgame from Roxley's website. The game will also be available in select retailers through PSI starting this December.
